Italy 2018: Day 1

Italy 2018: Day 1

This trip was born of celebrating my boyfriend’s birthday in Italy. He had never been and I wanted him to experience it. The trip began with a lovely overnight flight and when we landed in Frankfurt, it was delightful to watch him take in the German, the Italian, the French, and every other language that was being spoken there. He confessed to me later that he was very nervous to go to a different country, but that he trusted me. That is a little surprising, but I’m grateful for it. When we landed, we made our way to the first coffee stand that we could find. I wanted him to experience a Cappuccino like no other and I wanted to be with him when he did. We grabbed ourselves some delicious coffee and made our way to our next gate. We met some interesting characters along the way. As with most of my European trips, you end up having conversations in multiple languages to try and get your point across in whatever piece of whatever language any of you know. What this meant for us at this moment was 2 gentlemen sitting near us who spoke some English, some German, a lot of Austrian, and a little French. Being a bit of a broken linguist myself, I had enough words and could understand enough words that the conversation was meaningful. It turned out that they loved Elvis. What more do you need to know about a person?

From here, we flew to Geneva and found a hotel. It had just so happened that my mother and I were in Geneva the previous year, so we made our way to the same hotel. It ended up that they had a vacancy and the rate wasn’t too bad. Important note on Switzerland, it can be very expensive to visit, but it’s beautiful, so it’s worth it. After getting settled, we decided to wander around for a while to see what we could see. Mostly, he was seeing what he could see and I was enjoying him seeing it for the first time. It can be really fun taking a first time visitor somewhere that you have been for this very reason. I love watching the travel bug bite.

We stopped for dinner and had wine, of course. Watching him take in the scene and seeing how life differs from the U.S. was the perfect way to end the first day of our trip. I got to take the broken French for a walk during dinner and test out what I could remember from French class in high school. It was alright; we made it work. God love our waiter. Tomorrow, we head to Italy.

I hope you enjoyed this quick story.

Thanks, y’all!
