Ireland 2016: Day 9

Ireland 2016: Day 9

We finally slept in! I was so excited, I didn't have to get up until almost 8:30 AM! I almost can't believe it. But after a decent night's sleep, we trekked out for our final full day in Ireland. Starting with the Guinness Storehouse.

The tour began with a brief introduction and then you were on your own to follow the arrows and signs. We scheduled our tour for 9:30 AM (it's cheaper early in the morning) and there weren't that many people there at all. Surprise!

The whole building is one huge pint glass that could hold 14.7 million pints of Guinness if it were full. Each level tells you something different about the beer. You start with the ingredients, then move into the brewing, then the history, the tasting, and your end in the gravity bar at the top for with a great view of Dublin.

It was very educational and well laid out. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did and I'll tell you, Guinness is much better in Ireland than in the states. I don't know what it loses in transit, but it's important.

After our very enjoyable tour, we made for the gift shop before heading to Connelly Station to catch the train to Belfast. While waiting on my mom and sister outside, a lovely carriage driver invited me for a sit while I waited. We had a nice conversation about the weather and Dublin.

Mom and sis showed up so we hopped in a cab and made for the station-cutting it very close to our 9:20 AM train. 9:05 AM, we're not there. 9:11 AM, we're not there. 9:14 AM, we pull in.

I paid the driver and ran! I made for the ticket machine, my mother made for the kiosks and my sister was in between. I got the tickets, dashed to my sister, handed her hers, we ran to mom!   Handed mom her ticket and we all dated through the turnstiles and down the platform for the train.

We made it. With about 3 minutes to spare.

It's about a 2.5-hour ride from Connelly to Belfast and we sat and chatted the whole way. They're absolutely in love with the countryside in Northern Ireland, so there was a lot of picture taking and discussion of home buying.

We get into Belfast and make for the museum on foot, it's only twenty minutes and it's the only way we'll really see any of Belfast anyway, so on foot it is. Naturally, it starts raining. Well, light Irish rain we can handle. But the downpour we experienced... that was another story.

We made it to the Titanic Museum in one damp piece and headed in.

This place was stunning, inside and out and the exhibits were fascinating and interactive. You could spend a week in this place and not learn everything.

There's even a ride! I know that sounds lame, but we were excited. Nothing like a little lagniappe to brighten your day. The ride itself was a super interesting approach to knowledge sharing, but the mechanics of the little car you ride in were equally as impressive (for a nerd like me, that is).

The museum was incredible and very educational all along the way. There were interactive exhibits and photos everywhere. They had displays set up to model rooms and recordings of survivors telling the stories of the ship going down.

After you leave the museum, there's a little kiosk where you can scan your receipt and get a pretty commemorative ticket. I hopped in line and got my ticket and told my sister about it. She walks up, scans her receipt, and the ticket starts to print. Didn't finish though, she tore it out and only got half the ticket. So, my mom walks up thinking she'll get hers and the other half of my sister's. Nope.

Making back for the train station in Belfast to head back to Dublin, it started raining a bit more, but we seemed to survive it alright. At the station, the train was "failed" and we had to wait fifteen minutes or so for them to bring out another one to take us back.

The group of women in front of us was a riot to listen to! They were playing 80's music on their phones and dancing in the aisles of the train. As far as I know, this is not normal train behavior, but they were having a blast and we loved it.

The coolest part of the ride though was the rainbow. We saw a complete double rainbow!  Only in Ireland.

Getting a picture of the whole thing was challenging and didn't really succeed, but I tried really damn hard.

I tried so hard to get the whole thing, but it was just too close and the Windows in the rain we're not conducive for pictures.

Looking through my pictures, I see that I have a 2-second video of it, so I'll have to put that in a video on my channel.

After the beautiful rainbow, we made it into Dublin finally and headed to the flat.  There wasn't much else tonight other than repacking everything so that souvenirs and clothes could all fit. Then, it's off to bed and another early start to get to the airport.

I hope you liked today's story and that you tune in again tomorrow.

Thanks, y'all!
